That looks like it has had a fair smack up the back end, but the area where the kids would be is still fairly intact and I would imagine that any kids in there would have only suffered minor leg injuries. Any accident can be nasty and potentially fatal, and it is a moot point whether they are safer facing backwards in the rear (good in a frontal smash), or facing forwards in the rear. I have always believed that the safest point in a car is the middle of the back seat. We have a Maxi Cosi Cabriofix and it is quite frustrating that Maxi Cosi doesn't recommend that their seats go in this position. They only recommend each side, for reasons I have never quite fathomed out. I deliberated for ages as to whether to put our little 'un behind me the driver or the passenger. For every safe reason to put them on one side I could think of an unsafe reason not to!

Not being one who is afraid to admit they are wrong, and also not having a V70 at the mo to compare to, I will defer to you guys on this one. I was just looking at the size of the rear window opening and thinking it didn't look that much smaller...... Wonder what hit it? Flat fronted Lorry perhaps? Philip
This really does look nasty. You are right that no matter how safe the vehicle, if the smash is so bad then nothing will withstand it. As far as child car seats are concerned..the safest position (generally) is in the rear nearside of the vehicle. Different car seats respond differently in different vehicles. Statistically this is the safest place to be in most accodents. Volvos are notoriously a problem as they have short belts - good for adults so easy for child seats! I agree though. Putting a child in an area that is really part of the crumple zone is, to my mind, tempting fate. The best place to seek advice from is:- In Car Safety Centre Unit 5 The Auto Centre, Erica Rd, Stacey Bushes, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire MK12 6HS Tel: 01908 220909 Ask for Linda and feel free to mention me - Jonathan Wernick RoSPA certainly used to recommend them (this is how I found out about them) and they (when under John Lyus) used to train the road safety officers of local authorities on child in car safety. This place has the expertise to give practical advice for the correct seat for your children in your car and will never try to hard sell you a car seat. Unlike Halfords who look as though they have just come out of a car seat themselves! I have been going there every year for a safety check with our daughter (now 8 years old).
Hi When i got the v70 i looked at a 7 seat version. A friend showed me some accident research regarding rear shunts like this. I bought the 5 seater. I started buying Volvos because they were the safest cars, these rear facing seats are obviously a major issue even in a Volvo. Steve

Yep it's definately something to be aware of. Imagine it in something like a Zafira though, those two rearmost seats are RIGHT up against the tailgate. Not somewhere I would fancy sitting..... Cheers, John
That looks like one of a pair of V70's, the pictures were making the rounds a short while back. They were both at the same breakers. Identical cars, identical damage, both ex plod. I think they may have been film props, not real accidents. If you hit any car hard enough it doesn't matter who sits where but I agree, the rear facing seat are in the crumple zone.
