Not having done anything with subtitles before (not much call for subtitles when you're only watching flicks where they are blowing sh*t up for two hours :D ) I happily forgot all about them when doing Lucas' latest. Now I have a nice, fat, m2v file and an ac3 ready to mux back together in Maestro, but I forgot about the required subtitles in SWEP2-AOTC, such as when Annakin returns to visit Watto (?) on Tatooine, or when Dooku is consulting with his allies. I don't want to have to re-encode the video again, so can anyone tell me how to extract the (english) subtitle track I need to complete this project. I have got past the multiple angle situation on the opening chapter that has dogged a few people, so all I need is to re-incorporate the correct subtitle track and author it. Decrypter > dvd2avi > TMPG Plus > Maestro is the path I follow. HELP!! JF
Yeah, that one took me a while. Here's what I ended up doing: Used IFOedit to rip out an "angle-free" set of VOBS. Then, using SubRip, ripped out the subs from the new VOBS (English 2, I believe) in Maestro format. Then, when re-authoring, imported the subtitles, making each subtitle (there were less than 30, if memory serves) "forced" so it always displays, even with subs off.
FamousPerson Thanks for responding. I've just d/l SubRip and am somewhat confused by the dialog boxes. Could you detail what your choices were when it asks about colors etc? Whichever I choose it comes up with a dialog that says it cannot process this subtitle index - huh??? LOST might sum up my position right now. Can u help? Are there guides for this app? Cheers m8 Roy
FamousPerson Errrr... OK, I have found a guide to SubRip here Have followed it through and ended up with 1,324 subtitle bmps. Obviously this is the entire subtitle track for the whole movie. What I want is only the subtitles for the conversations that require them, so how do I locate them? I can see when you add them into Maestro, but how do I locate the correct ones from 1,324 of them (and position them on the timeline correctly)? I'm brainlocked here - can you help? Roy

Yes, you ripped English track 1. You don't want that one. You need to rip the other English track (I believe 2). You will know you have the right one because it is only a few bitmaps. You can select alternate subtitle tracks if you open the IFO (not the VOBS).
FP This is driving me nuts... I decided to start afresh with a clean rip. I loaded Decrypter, selected main movie files and extracted. Then loading the vobs into SubRip, it lists 4 English streams. English - 1 is the full english subtitle set (that's what I did last night). BUT if I select English -2 I get exactly the same 1324 bmp files - it's another full english subtitle set! English - 3 and - 4 are identical too - they are Diector's commentaries. Reading up on the guides I tried doing a stream processing rip from Decrypter. This identified a Forced Subtitle English stream. I was able to extract that to a .SUB file, but Maestro won't import it so I don't know how to incorporate it. I am going to try doing a full File mode rip now to see if I can locate the correct stream - maybe it's not in the main movie files if you leave Decrypter in that mode. Can you shed any light? Sorry to rag on at you but you're the only one who's responded. JF
I am trying to do this as well on the Traffic DVD. I imported the correct sub file to Maestro but in the preview and in a finished DVD the subtitles do not show up. OK found out how to force the subtitles in Maestro, but do you have to do each one individually?? I know there is a master pallete for the colours, but is there one where you can force all the subtitles at the same time??
FP Thanks for replying. I have loaded the main movie .ifo into IfoEdit (i have v091). Looking at the multiangle guide that's on doom9, it says to check Remove Angles and then select the one you want to keep. Well these 2 options are greyed out!! Is this something to do with the checkbox in Decrypter that says "Multi Angle Processing" is unchecked? In the guide it says that this should be unchecked, so that's how I left it. It does, if you enable it, allow you to select angles to keep - do you think this is relevant? Your help is appreciated bud. JF
