Some applications do 'validation' if you just drag, drop and burn the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. For example, Prassi by default checks the compliance of the folders if it sees them being burned. Sometimes it errors out (for invalid reasons). If you burn an image, you don't have to deal with that.

Besides that if you use a program to create the image that is known to make compliant DVD images then you don't need to worry as much that the burning program can do it correctly. Nero is a prime example. At least with 5.5.10.0 the DVD template was not completely correct. So if you used it some DVD players would not play it, but if you used a good image creation program and burned the image instead of using the template it worked fine. Also you bypass any changes that the burning program wants to make to the files if it thinks they should be different. Personally I don't make an image, but use RecordNow Max which is as good as any burning program I have seen for DVD's. If I could I would try Prassi Primo DVD, but my DVD recorder is not supported. Additionally it should help prevent errors caused by bad IDE bus drivers interacting with the DVD writting app. It will also ensure your files are put in the correct order.

I use Prassi Primo DVD to burn to DVD-R and dont have any problems with the actual burn process. So to sum up; there would be absolutely no advantage for me in using a image to burn. I have just started using IMGtools to make an image.
