Does anyone use this on Vista? Does it improve Reaper performance? I am considering trying the XP version from on my painfully slow netbook, which is currently unusuable for audio, and wanted to know if anyone had any success in using this to improve performance.

I don't use readyboost, but my laptop performs very well with Vista home premium service pack 2. Any more hints why your machine is performing so bad?

I think it is because of the processor. I have an HP 2133 Mini-Note netbook that I bought in June 2008 for work travel, and would love to run Reaper on it, just to record some very basic tracks while away, no major effects. As one of the first netbooks, it uses a Via C-7M 1.2 Ghz processor. Even though I have 2 gigs of RAM, I get many crackles and artifacts when I try to play a standard midi file through Reaper (using NI Bandstand for the instruments), and even web video is choppy. I have installed ASIO4All, but it doesn't seem to have helped much. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated!

I'd never heard of eBoostr, but if there's a free trial it wouldn't hurt to try! ;) I wouldn't expect an "acceleration program" to help unless there's some other application hogging the CPU or data bus and the program can give higher priority to REAPER. Have you checked your CPU utilization with Windows Task Manager? Just for reference, I'm on an AMD 2200 machine right now (single core) and when I play a MIDI, MP3, or WAV (with WMP), I get about 5% CPU usage. (I'm using regular "consumer quality" files... No high bit-depths, no high sample-rates, no muiti-channel, and no effects processing, etc.) Playing/recording "regular audio" just isn't that demanding*, but REAPER might be doing some MIDI processing that I'm not aware of... I assume you're using the internal soundchip? Have you tried a different (USB) soundcard? Even if the CPU seems overtaxed, it's worth trying a different soundcard, because it could be the driver, or for cost-savings they may have simplified the soundchip and handed some soundcard tasks back to the CPU. BTW- One of the machines I use at work has a VIA processor and it is S-L-O-W! * The kinds of things people do with a DAW can be very demanding, and I suspect few people are running DAWs on netbooks.

i use ready boost on one of my machines. it seems to have speed it up a bit, its a quad core with 6 gigs of ram. I tried it on a slower system and it did seem to improve performance. Pick up a cheap flash drive and give it a shot.

To avoid pops and clicks, I need to disable the wireless on my netbook when I use it for audio. Pete

have you tried the dpc latency tool? this lead me to disable wireless and the internal battery - running only from mains power, which helped a lot. running vista 32 home basic on a crappy laptop i had to wind back quite a few 'features' to a win98 state for reasonable audio performance. i think i followed some tips from: but it was quite some time ago and i don't know how necessary some 'tweaks' are - i'd research further (and back up) before diving in. hope this helps.

also, i did toy with readyboost initially, didn't notice much improvement,if any, and figured it would just be taxing the usb bus which was busy enough as it was with hd and audio. vista is seriously stripped and used only for audio with a puppy quirky linux os pressed into occassional use for internet duties: may be of interest to you. it can be run live from cd and need never touch your hd. good luck.
