Hi Mike, On my 1996 3ltr the length of the 'plungers' is adjustable - there is a screw slot in the conical head of each plunger and a crude pressed steel hexagon 'lock-nut' where it screws into the bonnet. If one of the plungers is not latching properly then this could be because it is adjusted too short and not locating deep enough into the latch that is set into the crossbeam at the front of the engine bay. Good luck with it. Stan.

Once, a long time ago, I took a 260 to have its aircon fixed. They had to remove the top panel at the front of the engine bay that the radiator/headlights/grill sit under and that the 'sockets' for the bonnet pegs are fitted in. Of course after they had reinstalled the condenser and all its works things were not in quite the right place. So it was necessary to loosen the peg on the bonnet (it adjusts sideways & forwards & back a bit when loosened) so as to get it in the right place. Then, when he thought he'd got it right but before he'd made very sure the one mechanic decided to 'test' it. It caught and locked alright! But the thing was overset in one direction and the bonnet release did not release it. It took us ages & ages & ages to eventually release it by tying wire around the bit of peg protruding below the panel and using an off-centre pull. Even then that only worked because the radiator grill hadn't been reinstalled. So, all I'd say is never allow the bonnet to be completely closed until you have checked it with it just on the latch, as at least if it jams at that stage you can still lever the bonnet side-to-side a bit. HTH Andy

Thanks both, yes I realise the plungers are adjustable, the N/side one, that that is the problem,is adjusted a lot longer than the O/side,this one locks. The previos owner had a new condensor fitted not long ago and the cable I think is in need of adjustment.Problem is I cannot even find the perishing cable, let alone adjust it,I can feel the end beneath the latch, but cannot get to it. I will have another go to-morrow.
