how to get around this behavior(?)

I always start a mix by setting an overall balance before anything else. Later when I turn on automation reaper takes the track level i've set and calls it 0dB on the fader and envelope. I've always hated this behavior when turning on automation, is there a way to get the envelope to appear at -15dB if that's where I set the track? (and the track fader to stay put too) thx!

What happens if you leave the automation at 0.00 at the start of the project for a beat or two. I always have a bar of empty space at the start of my projects so it would sound the same. That ought to cure the problem if REAPER takes it's cue from the initial setting

I think my first post is a little confusing. all I want is 2 things: after setting the level for each track 1. hit "V" and have the envelope reflect the same level 2. have the track fader stay put at the level I set it before hitting "V" as it is now 1 and 2 go up to 0dB when I hit "V"
