I am extremely interested in building a new desktop system around either an Athlon v64 3400+ or Centrino 2.0GHZ processor. I wondered which will offer me the more opportunity to build a faster system around their respective processors. I hear that the Centrino or Pentium (M) processors actually perform at about double their listed speed. How about the Athlon 64's? Their actual speed seems to be about a GB lower than their listed number. E.g. Centrino 1.7 runs at about 3.0GHZ and the Athlon 64 3400+ runs at about 2.2 GHZ. Which is preferable? And, what are their respective actual speeds? Does anyone know?? Thank you!
Hello Joel, Your own analysis of the actual speeds of these processors is pretty much right on. These are both great processors. I would also closely consider chipsets, frontside bus speed, L2 cache, memory speed, and drive speed/performance (the usual suspects). Said architechture of those Athlon processors seem to favor Pro Tools (even though I've went whole hog with Intel/Pentium myself) but also slog through Digi's compatibility Doc's to make sure your fully compatible. But unless someone else chimes in, I think your real close regarding said speed of those processors. len Nice to see someone from Mpls on here.. to bad the weather went south on us huh? ..and on my new system.. I made sure I could upgrade to a full blown HD system if the budget allows in the future
Thanks, yes, the weather in our great state is nothing to brag about! I like the idea of the Pentium M (Centrino) and wondered if you or anyone else might think I'll see greater performance vs the Athlon v64 chips in my desktop system? What are people raving about in terms of performance from processors for PTLE these days? Any advice on that? Cheers, Looks like General Nanosystems is getting me again!
Hi Joel, I've heard nothing but great things about those Centrino's for laptops (real workhorse performers in LE). I'm not sure about performance in a desktop though (unless somebody here can shed more light on this subject). len
